At noon on a sunny day, go outside and face the sun. Assuming you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you will be facing the south.

Where was the sun early this morning when it arose? Point in that direction. That is east.

Where will the sun be at sunset? Point in that direction. That is west.

Move your hand to show the sun’s daily journey from east to south to west.

Face your shadow. You are now facing north. Now the sun is behind you.

What direction is back of you? The back of you is south.

Look at the shadows of houses, of trees, of bushes, and of people. The shadows all fall to the north.

Can you make your shadow fall south? Why not?

Can you think of any time when the shadows would fall east or west?

Which direction does the front of your home face? Which direction does the back of your home face? Which direction does each side of your home face?

Notebook Work: Label the top of your notebook page with "LESSON 9." Sketch the rainbow-like path the sun takes across the sky from sunrise to sunset. Draw an arrow to show the direction of the sun's apparent motion. Label the place where the sun rises, "EAST." Label the place where the sun sets, "WEST."
